Primary Years Programme
What will my child be learning?
The primary years programme unites all the work in our classroom, integrating itself with the Common Core Standards. Students will experience six units of inquiry this year: 1) Who We Are, 2) Where We Are in Place and Time, 3) How We Express Ourselves, 4) How the World Works, 5) How We Organise Ourselves, 6) Sharing the Planet. Each unit will help students develop knowledge, social skills, communication, thinking, research, and self-management. Students will also learn Mandarin as a second language!
Because teaching the whole child is such a large part of the PYP program, the following attitudes will be stressed: appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, independence, integrity, respect, and tolerance. Each day on your child's success card, they will set a goal relating to the learner profile so they can start to see in themselves that they are open-minded, risk takers, inquirers, balanced, communicators, thinkers, caring, principled, knowledgeable, and reflective.
Students are expected not just to learn in school, but to take action in their home and community based on what we are learning in school. Please share with me anything you child has done at home to demonstrate their learning such as sharing goals with you, good deeds to others, or taking an initiative to do something differently or start something new.
How will my child be learning?
Your child will be learning through inquiry which will put them at the center of the learning process. Please expect that you child will be exploring, experimenting, making connections, making predictions, collecting data, testing theories, and solving problems many different ways.
How will I know how my child is doing?
A mix of quantitative and qualitative data will be used to measure student progress. Students will keep data folders that include quantitative data on reading, writing, math, and behavior. A student portfolio will also be used to keep examples of their work. State and district assessments will also be used to measure progress. You can expect communication daily using your child's FISH folder. On Fridays, behavioral information will be sent home as well as our class newsletter. I also love to shoot out emails when your child achieves a goal they set for themselves so please provide me with your email address. I can jot little notes too if you'd prefer a hard copy. Conferences are also a great time for children to share their progress with you!
How can I support my child's learning?
There are many things to support your child's learning. Ask them about school and what they are doing. Develop a school time routine regarding waking up, homework completion, and a regular bedtime. Read to your 4th grader every day and make it a fun experience so that they begin to associate reading with positive feelings. There are countless other things you can do to support your child's learning, but you know your child best so just have fun with them and infuse education into daily life. Play and have fun!
